Intro to Cosmetic Acupuncture, the natural form of facial rejuvenation and revitalization

written by: Roberto Iusso R.Ac

What is cosmetic acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a relatively ancient system of facial rejuvenation that pre-dates modern procedures such as cosmetic surgery, skin lifts, skin fillers, and Botox. It has also proved to be much safer and certainly much more holistic in approach.

So how does cosmetic acupuncture work?

Very tiny, sterilized, stainless steel acupuncture needles, as thin as human hair, are inserted just beneath the surface of the skin causing micro-stimulation of the skin, which then increases blood flow and the production of collagen and elastin.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of treatments – usually a set of 6-10 treatments lasting approximately 60-75 minutes each and scheduled over a period of 7-8 weeks – are recommended for best results. Follow up treatments after 1, 3 and 6 months are also suggested to maintain improvements. However, improvements may be noticeable in as few as 2 or 3 sessions.

What can you expect?

Apart from general improvements that accompany regular acupuncture treatments, facial rejuvenation-specific treatments can result in firmer skin, better skin tone, a reduction of wrinkles, and a tightening of the jowls.

Where are the needles placed?

Points on the body, usually the hands, arms, legs, and sometimes the abdomen, are utilized according to the specific conditions of each patient in order to balance their underlying energetic systems. In addition, intradermal needles may be used on the face, scalp, jaw, and neck areas.

How will it feel to you?

Like a tiny mosquito bite or pin-prick. More importantly, many patients happily report the healthy benefits of acupuncture treatment ranging from improved digestion, better-quality sleep, increased energy, and a sense of overall wellbeing.

How will it feel to you?

  • Assists in skin rejuvenation and improves skin tone and colour through acupuncture stimulation.
  • Points on the body are used to promote general health, and improve digestion and sleep, while smaller needles are used in concentrated patterns specifically on problem facial areas.
  • Dark circles, puffiness under the eyes, the thickness of scars, as well as the appearance of lines and wrinkles, can be significantly reduced.
  • It works even better when combined with a facial massage, cupping, guasha, and facial toning exercises (facial yoga) that patients can do themselves.
